Sights Unseen by Linda Larsen

In Sights Unseen, a visual hybrid work, the painter Linda Larsen dares to imagine the haunting remnants of history along the Carolina coast.  Gathering the evidence that washes ashore in dreams, or while walking on the beach, she sees faces in the waves, hollow shells, and bones, all embarked on the long migration into enslavement. Larsen watches as these images speak to her of their arrivals and departures, and she brings them to us, in a haunting series of paintings and mono-prints.

This collection of images, forms the framework for a conversation in text and image with Kitty Green and Domonique Holman, descendents of the enslaved Africans, who now form the living heritage of the Gullah-Geechee people of St. Helena Island.

Including commentaries by African-American literature profressor (emerita) Deborah James, and the poet Mildred Barya, the collaborative dialogue Larsen has created, affords readers a new way to imagine and to interact with history.
